A few weeks ago, my family and I attended the Neuse River Golden Retriever Rescue Reunion at Montague’s Pond in Cary, NC. In October of 2013, we adopted a one-year-old male golden from them and finally had an opportunity to get to one of their events.
The pond is privately owned and utilized for parties and such. In this case, a bunch of goldens, wanna-be goldens, and their owners, congregated there so the dogs could socialize and swim. It was a fun event that included a raffle, photos of the 2013 adoptees, and sales of food, t-shirts, and dog washes, the proceeds of which went to the organization. I have never seen so many golden retrievers in one place and it was pretty cool.
Our dog, who is very large, very much a doofus, and still very much a puppy, had a great time. We don’t know if he ever swam prior to us having him, but he sure had a good time swimming that day. An added bonus is that it tired him out, which is not so easy to do and he got a good bath afterward.
For anyone interested in golden retrievers, Neuse River is a great organization that’s been around since the 1980’s. According to their website, they’ve saved the lives of 2,750 dogs. The adoption process is pretty standard – potential adoptees fill out an application online and once approved, can peruse the website for bios of available dogs or attend a twice monthly adoption event at Animall in Cary. Fees are also pretty standard and vary slightly based on the age of the dog. They take in all sorts of dogs, and have a special fund for those needing extensive medical care which is provided by Carefirst Animal Hospital, which was our awesome vet way before we adopted from NRGRR. They are also always looking for foster families to help out as temporary owners for this sweet breed.
If you’re interested in finding out more about goldens or helping out a dog in need, either as a volunteer or adopter, check out their website for more information. Be sure also to take a look at the entries for this year’s calendar contest and vote for your favorites but be warned, here are some wonderful photos – it’s a tough choice!
