North Carolina summer has arrived. Yes – it’s true that there is a HEAT DOME oppressing all of the east coast right now … the difference is that my northern neighbors will only be dealing with temperatures in the 100’s and even 90’s for a few days. Here in Raleigh, it’s likely to be like this for the next two months.
When I lived up north, I looked forward to summer. After the long, cold, gray winters that last for a good 7 months, spring and summer were a treat, with relatively moderate temperatures most of the time and an opportunity to finally get outside and enjoy beautiful weather.
Here, in North Carolina, things are flipped, and I’m just still not sure how I feel about it. Here, the winter weather is lovely and it is winter that I actually look forward to. From late November through the end of April, the weather is generally sunny, crisp, and comfortable. Temperatures in the deep winter months rarely go below 50 degrees for very long. I have played golf in January, and sat on the beach in February here with no issue. It’s the summer months – June through September – that are largely spent inside hiding from the big heat, and I do mean BIG heat. While my northern friends spend much of their winters bundling up and sitting in front of UV lamps, I spend my summers trying to avoid getting sick from the extreme temperature differences between outside and in. There is sweaty, suffocating, oven-like heat and humidity whenever you step outside. Exercising, playing, cookouts … all miserable experiences here in the summer.
I truly don’t know which I prefer, but I do know, right about now, that I’m digging in and preparing to just get through it, because this weather sucks.
